Obsidian is a hard, dark, glass-like volcanic rock formed when molten rock cools very quickly, and is found where lava comes into contact with water or cool air. It has a smooth, glassy appearance and is deep black or blackish green in colour.

Snowflake Obsidian contains crystals of Cristobalite that form a snowflake type pattern within the Obsidian, thus its name.
